Clinical Psychology
As a Clinical Psychologist Pretoria based, I engage in psychotherapy (talking therapy) with those who experience depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychosis, personality disorders, etc., often with a psychiatrist, who can prescribe medicine. There are various forms of psychotherapy available for help. CBT is a form of psychotherapy which is applied worldwide and is evidence-based.
Beckian Cognitve Therapy/CBT is founded on the model of a dynamic interaction between a specific context, biology, thoughts, feelings and behaviour. The focus of therapy is determined by the specific problem and is individually tailored to you. The process of Cognitive Therapy is facilitated by guided discovery, whereby thinking is tested by what is termed ‘collaborative empiricism’.
Your early history is relevant in terms of the influence thereof on present experience and thinking. Therapy consists of various cognitive and behavioural interventions, and the encouragement of emotion related to your circumstances.
This change is embodied through a compassionate therapeutic relationship, in an informal and private environment. The therapeutic relationship would become more instrumental during later stages of therapy, when 'core beliefs' and 'schemas' established in earlier memory and emotional experience would be addressed; if necessary (also see Schema Therapy.
