We have a number of societal problems such as depression and anxiety which affect people of all ages and an intervention that teaches people cognitive skills to enable them to manage those related challenges better. Thus, why don't more people benefit today from the CBT approach?
In my opinion it is the lack of the traditional face to face interaction. People would rather pop a pill than go for training because time is limited, they might feel embarrassed or scared, are anti-social and most importantly the side effects of their illness prevent them from seeking treatment.
We can view cognitive therapy as a method for well-structured cognitive exercise, where a key factor of success is practice. Just like normal physical exercise. We can therefore view the CBT Therapist as a personal trainer who motivates you to stay on track, to propose the right exercise routine based on your personal goals. If the personal trainer is with you the whole time, encouraging you to do and monitoring your exercises, you are most likely to achieve them and complete them.
